What Was Far Out - Now Is In! Hospitals are not only for the sick, they are incorporating complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) for preventative care; they are offering care beyond what most consider to be traditional health services. “I’ve had great results with what’s called alternative medicine.” Patrick Kerney, defensive end, Seattle Seahawks. American Hospital Association survey shows the percentage of hospitals offering one or more CAM services increased from 8% in 1998 to 27% in 2005. The top six CAM services offered on an outpatient basis among hospitals offering CAM were, massage therapy, yoga, relaxation training, acupuncture, guided imagery and therapeutic touch. The Seattle Seahawks have a chiropractor who travels with the team, he is also an acupuncturist. The men that he treats are men with aching bodies, eager to find ways to get back on the playing field, without the use of steroidal compounds for the quick and dangerous solution. The treatments include, deep tissue massage, acupuncture treatment, chiropractic treatment all under the heading of healing. NFL players’ bodies are there business and it requires investment and constant up keep. Players’ spend half their week preparing for the next game and other half recovering from the last one. The sixteen game schedules grinds away like a file for four months. Players receive deep tissue massages; many spend several fifteen minutes sessions each day alternating between hot and cold tubs, the sixty degree swing in temperature stimulating circulation to flush out soreness almost as if they are cars getting their oil changed. The BodySense products are the alternative treatment when not at the sports facility and still being able to have the hot/cold treatment. BodySense is the hot/cold aromatherapeutic treatment that has the herbs and spices that offer the healing properties. Soccer, softball, baseball, you name it and you (spouse, kids, teammate, etc.) ache. The first application brought out of the freezer is the Knee Wrap; it helps in easing pain and reduces inflammation. The Elbow Wrap has the same influence as the Knee Wrap. The pain is less substantial, the inflammation has receded but one still hurts. The same product that is used for cold treatment is put in the microwave for a few minutes and you have 35-40 minutes of moist heat. |
